The ASUS TUF Gaming A15 is a gaming laptop from ASUS, targeted to hardcore gamers with a few improvements over the previous TUF lineup generations.
The unit given to me is the TUF Gaming A15 [FA506IV], powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H clocked at 2.90GHz and a GeForce RTX 2060. The processor supports hyper-threading with 8-cores and 16 threads. The laptop is assisted by a 32GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3200MHz and 1TB of M.2 SSD. Thankfully, the TUF Gaming A15 allows you to future proof the laptop by providing additional dual-RAM slots, dual-M.2 slots and a single 2.5 HDD bay, since I always recommend to others to install game on/play the game from HDD instead of SSDs. The display features a 15.6-inch IPS-panel clocked at 144Hz with 45% NTSC.

TUF Gaming A15 Walkthrough
Upon unboxing the laptop out of the box, a unit of ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop, a power adapter, a user manual, a few stickers and a TUF bagpack. The accessories are quite standard and it is quite disappointing for not getting a free gaming mice just like how ASUS shows their love towards their ROG lineup series.
The design of the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 is quite similar with the previously reviewed, TUF FX505DU with a few additional changes, claimed by ASUS. At the first glance, I admire the matte finish of the chassis that adds a premium feel.
The chassis of the TUF Gaming A15 has a honeycomb design, which according to ASUS, to allow a better airflow that improves the hardware performance and at the same time, maintains the core performance needed for an intensive gaming session. Well, according to me, this laptop has a small design flaw where the vents provided, doesn’t really provide a better airflow since there are two vents located at the rear of the TUF Gaming A15 and one single vent with half of the vents were blocked to allow hot air pushed over the top vents located at the right hand side. So, if you are a right-handed person (using gaming mice with right hand), be prepared to get a free warm air from the vents.
The I/O panels that come with the TUF Gaming A15, not really great, despite of its high price. On the right side of the laptop, an air ventilation holes, a USB Type A port while a charging port, an RJ45 Gigabit LAN port, HDMI port, two USB Type A ports, a USB Type C port and a 3.5mm audio jack located on the left.
The TUF Gaming A15 was patched to the latest Windows 10 Build 2004 and all the pre-installed drivers and benchmark drivers used are in their respective latest build. In addition, for a better benchmark analysis, the free bundled McAfee Security software was uninstalled in order to avoid conflict in between the softwares.
This section of the review measures the real-life performance of Ryzen 7 4800H processor, hence a total of three profiles has been used, Silent, Performance and Turbo.
The next test result obtained from using a free benchmark software from Cinebench R20. Each test was conducted after 5 minutes of interval to allow the CPU to be in its idle state before benchmarked once again under another profile. Below are the benchmark result for the profiles.
Game Rendering Performance
The benchmark software used for this test is Heaven UNIGINE Benchmark. The API mode used is DirectX 11 and the profile was set to high. Below are the result from the test with different profiles.
Storage Read/Write Performance
The storage benchmark tool used is the CrystalDiskMark Standard Version. A total of three different tests was conducted for each profile before the best benchmark output was selected and listed in the table below.
|Test Count:||5||Test Size:||1 GiB||Test Drive:||C:/||Test Units:||MB/s|
|Type||Read [MB/s]||Write [MB/s]|
The ASUS TUF Gaming A15 features a standard 2×2 MU-MIMO wireless card from Realtek. Being a gaming laptop bundled together with a standard wireless card, how well the card performs in real life when wireless connectivity was needed in exchange over a wired connection. Below are the output of the wireless benchmark for wired, wireless (5GHz) and under a VPN connection (client desktop app).
|Connection Type||Ping (ms)||Download (Mbps)||Upload (Mbps)|
ASUS TUF Gaming A15 features Armoury Crate software as standard. Armoury Crate is a software developed by ASUS that allows a centralized management for all the ASUS-peripherals to be used.
Armoury Crate allows you to sync other Aura-Sync supported peripherals. By doing so, you don’t really have to download the ASUS Aura-Sync driver to power up your ASUS peripherals. This is certainly a good way of reducing the possibility of the storage space to be consumed by an unwanted software.
Another good thing I liked about the TUF Gaming A15 is, it has a pretty decent audio system. Also, if you’re using a good quality headphones from a reputable audio manufacturer, you can fully utilize the DTS audio software bundled in the TUF Gaming A15.
The ASUS TUF Gaming A15 laptop costs RM5699 and the laptop are currently available in the most ASUS certified e-store and retail store. Summarizing the review up, the TUF Gaming A15 is not a premium gaming laptop like their ROG lineup series. The TUF Gaming A15 does have flaws in their chassis design, however, for a true hardcore gamers, there are better options out there. If you’re on a tight budget, then the TUF Gaming A15 is already a good choice. The laptop is also recommended for content creators and required a color accurate external monitor, also travelers due to its lightweight size. Bundled with a powerful processor and graphics card, the TUF Gaming A15 is a decent gaming laptop.
