GIGABYTE Issues Statement on SP-CAP and MLCC Capacitors Used on GeForce RTX 3080 Graphics Card

GIGABYTE released their official statement over the reports spreading over the internet on the use of POSCAP capacitors on their GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards that causes instability during an extensive gameplay. In order to clear the issue reported by a few potential customers and reviewers out there, the following clarification has been released for the public view.

  1. It is false that POSCAP capacitors independently could cause a hardware crash. Whether a graphics card is stable or doesn’t require a comprehensive evaluation of overall circuit and power delivery design, not just the difference in capacitor types. POSCAPs and MLCCs have different characteristics and uses, thus it is not true to assert that once capacitor type is better than the other.
  2. The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards are designed in accordance with NVIDIA‘s guideline and passed all the required testing, thus the product quality is well assured. GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC and EAGLE OC series graphics card use high-quality, low-ESR 470uF SP-CAP capacitors, which meets the specifications set by NVIDIA and provide a total capacity of 2820u in terms of GPU core power, higher than the industry’s average. The cost of SP-CAP capacitors is not lower than that of MLCCs. GIGABYTE values product integrity highly and definitely does not reduce the costs by utilizing cheap materials.

To resolve the issues, NVIDIA released a driver on September 29, 2020 that improves stability especially during extensive gameplay. In accordance, users are advised to update their existing driver to the latest driver.

GIGABYTE assures that they’ve been constantly improving and optimizing product lineup quality to meet the industrial standards, particularly in terms of thermal designs to provide a better gameplay to the consumers. In addition, they also paid an extra attention over the cooling performance and introduced the MAX-Covered Cooling, an industry-leading solution to ensure the operation of each component, stable.
