Sonic Gear Space 5 | REVIEW

The Sonic Gear Space 5 is the big brother of Sonic Gear Space 3, pricing at the SRP of RM135, I’ve taken this opportunity to give the speaker a test.

OVERVIEW

The speaker packaging was decent, marks all the important information regarding the speaker was well defined. The internal packaging of the speaker is decent, mind you that, I personally feel that, this is considered as a decent when it comes to its price range. The mid-satellite, the subwoofer and the accessories was wrapped with plastic neatly.

The 2.1 audio system comes with a single unit of Space 5, a user manual, a single multi-function volume controller and a single line-in stereo cable.

5
Bluetooth – Line-in mode button.

Unlike Space 3, the Space 5 comes with a large volume knob which serves as the controller of the volume of the audio system. The knob supports wireless Bluetooth as well, line-in and music files via micro SD up to 32GB to be precise. The built quality of the volume knob having a plastic feel rather than a premium feel, as, it is acceptable for its price range.

8
The satellite speaker of Space 5.

The satellite speaker is slightly heavier than the Space 3, but lighter than its elder brother, Space 7. The driver used for the Space speaker lineups are all identical and the only thing that, differentiates the quality is the finishing of the speaker grill. The Space 3 and 5 were molded with plastic wheel, the Space 7 was mould with aluminum (premium feel).

6
The subwoofer of Space 5.

The Space 3 has all its dedicated controllers located in the subwoofer itself. However, for the Space 5, the volume controller was separated and only bass knob was the only controller given attached to the subwoofer itself. The woofer driver used for the Space 5 is the same driver used in the Space 3 and Space 7. I must say, I like this woofer design, small, yet, cute.

AUDIO QUALITY

Now, let’s focus on the main agenda of this post. We always opt for the best audio system to deliver an optimum quality for the music genre we used to listen, right?

For this particular audio quality experiment, I’ve used ASUS ROG G752VT to conduct the test.

7

Firstly, the mid is strong for this lineup of Space speakers, resulting in a fuller audio output. The vocals are warmer and easily can be caught up even in the minimum volume level. Next, the bass is somehow slightly muddy and worsens when the volume is raised. The Space 5 is a neutral audio system that, has, everything in the right place.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantage

  1. Cheap and affordable.
  2. Decent mid quality.
  3. Comes with desktop volume controller.
  4. Decent bass quality.
  5. Bluetooth and miscroSD support.
  6. Small size of the subwoofer (refer to conclusion part).

Disadvantage

  1. The woofer is light, when at high volume, the sub-woofer will slightly move from its actual placed position.
  2. Messy cables.

CONCLUSION

The Sonic Gear Space series is an alternative option for the audio enthusiasts, looking for a decent 2.1 audio system over the EVO series, which is ruling the audio market for more over than 5 years. This audio system has all the user needs, mainly focusing on Bluetooth 4.2 and microSD support, by which, ease the user to directly connect to the audio system via smartphone to listen to the musics or watch videos.

Untitled-1
Space 5 Maroon.

The price is affordable, slightly cheaper compared to its elder brother, Space 7, this audio system probably the best, in the Sonic Gear audio system lineup. The audio system is not too big, thus, ease the placement of the speakers and the subwoofer can fit, even in a smaller space on the small table.

The general built quality of the speaker is good, especially when it comes to the woofer box, however, it differs when it comes to the satellite speaker, the built quality is not promising as, it would be easily toppled over.

WALKTHROUGH

Satellite Speaker

The satellite speaker comes with 2″x4 driver that produces high vocal clarity, and at some point, when the volume was set to high, the driver seems to be punching a minimal amount of bass.

Subwoofer

I personally like the subwoofer design here. This woofer comes with a volume knob located at the top, a treble knob located in the middle and a bass knob that located at the bottom.

The bass reflex port was located at the rear of the subwoofer, so, I would strongly recommend that, if you decided to place the woofer at the top of your desk, make sure, to place the woofer not too close to the wall. Keep at a distance between the wall and the bass reflex port.

10

A closer look of the subwoofer. The driver built quality is good. The diaphragm of the speaker feels solid.

SETTING UP THE SPEAKER

The setting up of this speaker is easy. Just follow the given instruction and you’re good to go.

The lights can be customized as only two presets were given at the moment, a color cycle and a solid color. A single button given to control the preset of the lights, by which, when the woofer were turned on, the preset turns into color cycle, when the button pressed once, the color cycle turns solid according to current color, you can repeat the process as well for your favorite color. However, you can’t turn off the lights.

AUDIO QUALITY

Reminder:

In order to get optimum output from this speaker, it is highly recommended to tweak your equalizer settings in your stock sound-card or an aftermarket sound-card.

The light was set to white color.

Bass

Songs

The bass from the woofer is deep. I always play 320kbps song, so, I can feel the deep bass at the half volume, the bass seems to be solid and not distorted.

Movies

Watching an HD movie or a blue-ray movies, the bass is deep and I really enjoy my movie session with this speaker.

Games

Playing games such as CS or PUBG, the speaker delivers deeper bass and I have a fun gaming session here.

Clarity

Songs

This satellite speaker comes with 4 x 2″ driver. All the driver did a great job on delivering vocal, although, the speaker seems cheap. No issues here.

Movies

Watching movie and the audio quality that comes through the speaker seems decent and I can catch most dialogues from the movie w/out even have to increase the volume.

Games

If you played CSGO game, you should know the importance of receiving commands and, a good vocal shall guide you to the victory, hence, this speaker scores here.

Balance Audio

Songs

Playing the song at its highest bit-rate seems perfect. I just love my music session through this speaker.

Movies

As mentioned in the above, the speaker delivers deeper bass and crystal solid vocal of the movies.

Games

The speaker scores a perfect score here.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages

  1. Cheap and affordable.
  2. Deep bass in the same par with the legendary Altec Lansing VS4121 & Edifier E3100.
  3. The size of the woofer is decent & the design of the subwoofer is one of the best.
  4. The subwoofer can be placed on top of the desk, although there is a myth that, subwoofer must be placed at the bottom of the desk.
  5. Bass and Treble control given.
  6. RGB – The light can be controlled with a button, given two presets, automated light cycle or solid color.
  7. Bluetooth and USB feature available.

Disadvantages

  1. The satellite speaker design is awful – not stable and can be toppled over easily.
  2. In order to enjoy the deep bass, you bass knob should be at the maximum level.
  3. The subwoofer will move when at high volume.

CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, as per title tagline above, do it really conquer your ears? My answers is yes. It does. Whether you like or not the brand, it does deliver what it promises.

17

This speaker not suitable if you’re student and staying in a dorm (university) as, the bass from this speaker is too strong and, it might disturb the person at the next door. However, if you’re a student living at outside (rent/parents house), then, this speaker definitely for you.

To summarize my points, this speaker, totally worth for your money, if you’re missing the good old days with Altec Lansing, then, you won’t get wrong with this speaker as well.

SONIC GEAR SPACE 3 2.1 Speaker | REVIEW

In general, SONIC GEAR was well known before for their EVO series. With mesmerizing graphical equalizer on their EVO lineup series, the reception of the user towards the EVO series, mostly negative due to there was a scandal involves in one of their famous EVO series. However, their Armageddon series especially, Armageddon A5 recieved massive positive reviews from the critics and users and, it was selling like a hot cake.

Figure 1: SONIC GEAR SPACE III.

I am not a fan of SONIC GEAR, but, I am a big fan of their Blue-Thunder Series. So, for today’s review, lets have a look at their budget 2.1 speaker under the code name of, Space III.

OVERVIEW

SONIC GEAR SPACE III is a budget speaker specially made for the budget seekers to satisfy their audio cravings. There are 3 Models of the Space lineup, Space III, Space V and Space VI. Space III is the cheapest costing around RM79 (Promotional Price) while Space VI cost about RM200.

The specification of the speaker is as follows:

spec

PACKAGINGS

Before Unboxing

The box was slightly dented, but the item inside was well protected.

9
Figure 3: The front view of the box.

At the rear view of the box shows the specification of the speaker. For its price, I would say, it is a decent spec for budget lovers.

8
Figure 4: The rear view of the box.

After Unboxing

I don’t really feel impressed with the packaging, I would say, it is below average style of the packaging of the item.

10
Figure 5: The egg carton covers the speaker.

There is a lot of space in between of the woofer and the satellite speakers.

11
Figure 6: The speaker in the box.

Personal View of the Quality

Satellite Speaker

First of all, let’s look at the satellite speaker, it was light and I can see the cheap materials was used to build it. At the bottom of the speaker, you can’t see any rubber that prevents the speaker from moving or for a better grip, but, the speaker can be easily flipped over.

2
Figure 7: The satellite speaker.

Subwoofer

The subwoofer was slightly heavy, but it is considered the lightest when it comes to subwoofer class. The good thing about this woofer is, this woofer suitable to be put onto the table rather than putting on the floor as most audio experts suggested a subwoofer should be placed on the floor rather than on top of the desk. However, at a high volume, the subwoofer does move and I have to place it back on the right position, possible due to poor built quality.

4
Figure 8: The front view of the woofer.

The rear view of the woofer is empty. Nothing much to be explained here.

6
Figure 9: The rear view of the woofer.

At the side of the woofer, the user can control the amount of bass and volume using the knob given, a dual audio input port for each satellite, a 3.5mm female jack port for the cable to be connected to the PC or laptop, a button to change the mode of the speaker (PC or Bluetooth) and an on / off switch.

7
Figure 10: The side view of the speaker.

If you place the woofer at the bottom of your desk, then, you can exercise yourself by doing sit-ups on adjusting the volumes and turn on/off the audio system.

SETTING UP THE SPEAKER

The speaker set-up process was pretty straight-forward and easy.

AUDIO QUALITY

Bass

The bass feels solid, yet, punchy. However, when the volume of the audio system was increased, the bass feels muddy and distorted. The woofer itself moves during the high volume due to poor build, well, it is acceptable though for its price.

Clarity

The clarity wise, the satellite speaker did not perform well for my ears. I don’t have much complain about that, as, you can improve this defect on your equalizer settings. If you’re a gamer, or a movie lover, the vocal quality were slightly worse and, you need to increase the volume to cope up with the vocals.

Balance Audio

The amount of bass and clarity when played together was, okay. Yes, in the beginning, it was awful, but after tweak my equalizer settings, I able to cope up the quality that I need from the speaker.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages

  1. Cheap for 2.1 Speaker System.
  2. Excellent design.
  3. Able to fit even the smallest place on top of your desk.
  4. Solid bass (not the best, but, by far, the best for its price – your equalizer plays an important role here).
  5. Bluetooth feature.
  6. I like the subwoofer design.

Disadvantages

  1. Short cables for 3.5mm male-to-male jack.
  2. The bass tends to get muddy when the volume was increased.
  3. Not the best audio quality when it comes to clarity.
  4. Woofer tends to get slightly hot after few hours of usage.
  5. Light satellite speakers.
  6. Low quality cables.
  7. When the audio system turned off, and turned on again, the mode of the audio went to Bluetooth instead of PC, and you have to manually do that every time you turn on the audio system.

CONCLUSION

To conclude this review, the speaker definitely best for university students as if they’re staying in the dorm and looking for a cheap and affordable speaker, this then is the one.

12
Figure 11: The final view of the Space III.

The speaker does a good job working with the on board soundcard (Realtek) and for those who using the third party soundcard, then, the audio quality from this speaker, might be different for you, might be best for your ears as SONIC GEAR’s tagline, “Trust your ears“. For the price of RM79, I don’t have much complains about it as, Sonic Gear always targets budget seekers rather than audio lovers. If you’re a gamer, then this speaker is not for you, but, if you’re staying in a dorm, yet, you wish to have a decent 2.1 speaker system for your gaming session, then, this speaker might suit your needs.

Last but not least, I bought the speaker under a promotional price. I am not sure how much they will sell after this, but, if you’re interested to buy this speaker, you may visit the ALL IT Hypermarket at level 3 of Plaza Lowyat. They are having promotions now. You won’t regret buying your favorite parts from the shop.

My Recommendations (Budget Seekers): 7.5 / 10

My Recommendations (Audio Lovers): 4.5 / 10
