This is tutorial for the users who are using an ASUS wireless router. ASUS had introduced a feature called AiMesh to extend your wireless coverage within your home. For today’s tutorial, I will be using two wireless router from ASUS, modelled an AC68U and the latest AX88U.

I will be making the AX88U wireless router to be the master router and the AC68U to be the slave router. In order to successfully set up the AiMesh feature in your wireless router, your wireless ASUS router should be running on the stock firmware, mind you that, AiMesh feature won’t really work on Asus-Merlin firmware. RMerlin (Developer of Asus-Merlin) quoted:
“At this time, there are no plan to support AiMesh in my firmware, due to technical limitations“, he then added, “The root problem isn’t that it’s closed source, the problem is that there are compatibility issues between AiMesh and my code, and I cannot address these because AiMesh is a closed source.“.
Before we proceed to the tutorial, mind you that, your ASUS wireless router should be running on the latest firmware. This is due to, any bugs present in your wireless router model has to be successfully patched in the latest firmware.
For those who don’t really know where to look up the latest firmware provided by ASUS for their wireless routers, you can always hit up here. If your wireless router isn’t listed here, do not worry as, you still can key in your wireless router model as per attached below.
From the above image, I key in asus ax88u keyword on the provided address bar on the browser and the results are as above as the model is not available in the ASUS Malaysia website. You can proceed to download the dedicated latest firmware of this router here. Mind you that, ASUS firmware was made globally and not restricted as other wireless router manufacturer, even if you use the firmware from ASUS USA website, and you are located in Malaysia, you still can proceed to flash the router with the provided firmware.
Now, it is time to focus on our main agenda here. I would like to remind you to flash the slave node to the latest firmware before resetting the slave node wireless router to factory configuration before proceeding with the steps which, I am about to guide you through to successfully setup the AiMesh.

Master Node / Router: AX88U
Slave Node / Router: AC68
Steps of Setting up AiMesh
Login to your master router. Next, click on the AiMesh Node button before hitting up the search button on the given AiMesh panel on the right-hand side of your Web UI. At this point, your slave node should be powered.
- If your master router’s WPS feature was on, then you can straight away proceed to Step 3.
- If your master router’s WPS feature wasn’t turned on, then, you will be directed to the WPS feature panel in your Web UI and notify you to enable it / turn on the WPS feature automatically once the “OK” button was pressed.
Once completing Step 2, the master router will identify the possible slave node and show the available slave node in the AiMesh panel.
Click on the on the shown slave node to establish the connection from your master router to your slave router, wirelessly. The process of adding the slave node to your network will consume some time, roughly around a minute or two.
Once the connection from your master router to your slave node was established successfully, the Web UI will show the a popup message indicating the process was successful and the slave node was successfully added to the network. During this point, you don’t really have to configure any of wireless settings on your slave node as, the master router will take care of everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Even if you try to login to the assigned IP address of the slave node, you will be directed to master router’s Web UI.
You can check the slave node in the AiMesh panel when you click on AiMesh button. You can add more slave nodes in your network and the maximum slave node allowed are 5 including the master router as per quoted by ASUS’s engineers.
How to remove the slave node from the master router (Remove AiMesh node)?
Click on the ‘minus’ / ‘delete’ button at the top right of the slave node’s signal indicator.
A popup message will be shown as a confirmation of removal of the slave node from your AiMesh’s master router.
Click on “Apply” button and the system will remove (abort) the slave node of your AiMesh network. A gentle reminder to not to immediately turn off your slave node as, your slave node will automatically reset to its factory configuration automatically.
The process of removing the slave node from the master router can be done within three steps. You can later on add the same slave node to your master router anytime.
It is highly advisable to locate your slave node right beside the master router during setting up AiMesh for better detection before you place the slave router to the desired place within your home. Do make sure to check the signal strength of the slave node from your main router for optimum result.
Last but not least for the remark section, if your slave node comes with 3×3 MIMO and your master node is 4×4 MIMO, and you’re located near your slave node (let it be smartphone, wireless adapter 4×4 MIMO capable or laptop), thus, you will receive the speed of 3×3 MIMO even though the master node is capable of transmitting 4×4 MIMO. However, if you’re planning to use the wireless router via wired, although it is a slave node, hence, you still will receive the speed that the slave node (3×3 MIMO) can capture from the master router (4×4 MIMO).
There you go. The AiMesh setting up process is very straightforward. The only downside of this feature is, you can’t really / should not turn off your WPS feature in your master router as, it would affect the wireless connectivity of the slave node towards your master node.
Before I put an end for this tutorial, if you are using an old AC router from ASUS, and the model supports AiMesh feature, you can use the router as a slave node. It is highly advisable to put an AC router (master node) which is equal to your slave node or even more powerful than your slave AC node.
