OVERVIEW

Previously, I’ve reviewed the AC86U wireless router, which is, the big brother of our today’s hero, AC68U. In general, AC68 have a standard ASUS router’s design, while, AC86U appears to have more cyber-sporty look design. AC68U is the entry level of the high end router’s of ASUS. As for the test, I will be using the standard Asuswrt firmware. For most home users, the stock firmware is sufficient.

PACKAGING’S

Disclaimer: This is the original version of AC68U and please do not confuse with the TM-AC1900 version.

SETTING UP FOR FIRST USE

The setting up process is pretty straight forward, just like most ASUS routers.

INTERFACE WALK-THROUGH

As for this router, it sames the similar traits of its family.

WIRELESS PERFORMANCE

The test was conducted under stock Asuswrt firmware.

Wireless settings

My standard wireless settings are as follows:

Wireless Analysis

download
Figure 17: The download speedtest result.

Analysis of Downloads:

At the upstairs, I always get over 90% of subscribed bandwidth. Well, most of the time, I able to achieve full speed on 5GHz wireless channel and through the LAN cable. As the distance increased, the wireless speed for 5GHz band tends to lesser compared to the 2.4GHz wireless band.

upload

Analysis of Uploads:

The upload speed seems to be fluctuates compared to its big brother even the distance was increased.

Iperf3 Testing

I able to achieve over 95 Mbit/s on my laptop, which, surprisingly, performs slightly better than its bigger bro. Nice.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages:

  1. Stylish look.
  2. Router stays cool.
  3. Stable stock firmware.
  4. Presence of two USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
  5. Supports Asus-Merlin firmware.
  6. AiProtection.
  7. A physical button to turn off the wireless functionality.
  8. A physical button to turn off the LED’s.
  9. Excellent wireless coverage.
  10. Able to handle up to 10 devices at a time, if not, more.
  11. Stock firmware supports AiMesh (Can be paired with the routers that supports AiMesh from ASUS).

Disadvantages:

  1. Doesn’t comes with Captive Portal.

FINAL VERDICT

As a small brother of AC86U, the router cope up with the user’s need. As far as running on the stock firmware, the firmware seems to be stable, and the wireless coverage is excellent. Besides that, the router comes with halve RAM of AC86U, but, excel on handling multiple connected devices at a time. As an example, I’ve put a test on streaming to 4K videos at a time both on my PC (LAN cable) and my laptop (5GHz wireless band), the router seems to give equal amount of bandwidth to stream towards the same videos.

Finally, I am using this router currently, and, as for my needs, this router perfectly suits me well. It doesn’t just secure my house with its powerful AiProtection, it keeps me cool by working well for my needs. One thing I liked about this router is, this model still receives firmware upgrades, which is cool.

My Recommendations: 8.9 / 10
